Cheese Bread
If you’ve ever been to Metro, a Canadian supermarket, you may have seen their cheese bread in the bakery section. After having it, I was completely inspired to make my own! Making bread can be quite a task, but it’s definitely an activity that is super fun, satisfying, and even impressive! This bread is super savory, and is great even just on its own! I love pairing this recipe with soups, chili, and sandwiches.
Ingredients
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/3 cup warm water
- 2 1/4 tbsp yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 5 tbsp unsalted butter melted
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
Instructions
- Mix together buttermilk, warm water, yeast and sugar in a dough mixer (I used a Ninja mixer).
- Once mixed, add the butter, egg, salt, garlic powder and 1 cup of the flour. Mix on low and then slowly add the remaining flour till it all comes together. This will take about 3-4 minutes.
- Transfer the dough into a large bowl (at least 3 times the size of the current dough), cover with a kitchen towel and allow it to sit in a warm environment for 2 hours.
- Grease a loaf pan.
- After dough has rose, place it on a lightly floured surface and roll it out flat and rectangular.
- Place the shredded cheese evenly on the dough, then tightly roll the dough into a log shape.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the log into half- be careful during this step that the product doesn’t fall apart. Then criss-cross one piece over the other, forming a tight X shape.
- Place into a loaf pan and sprinkle any remaining cheese and fresh parsley. Cover with aluminum foil.
- Preheat the oven to 350F and bake covered for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove foil and bake for another 20 minutes or until cheese is lightly browned.
- Remove from oven and let bread cool for 10 minutes in the pan before serving.
